heraldsun.com.au HARNESS RACING CRAIG’S CALL with CRAIG RAIL 1 Barrier Reef Pools 6.30 Craig’s call: XILE (1) is a very talented 4yo, which overcame a tough run to win at Albion Park last outing. He is likely to trail the speedy mare DON’T FALL FOR ME (2) and will take beating via the sprint lane. DON’T FALL FOR ME (2) is a short course specialist, which led throughout in a 1.55.8 mile last outing. She has won 13 of her 21 starts and is a proven Group One winner so she will take catching from her good draw. CAMBER LAD (6) is likely to press forward to race on the outside of the leader. He recorded a slick final half when he led throughout at the Gold Coast last outing and is capable of adding to his consistent record here. RICH HERITAGE (7) possesses brilliant gate speed and boxed on well after enduring a tough run in the final 1200m on Saturday night. She hasn’t won at her past ten attempts but is a strong place possibility.BENNY MAC (10) has been disappointing at his past two starts but is capable of a better performance and ASTROPHE (8) is a minor place hope from his likely position of being three back on the markers. SUGGESTED BET: XILE (1) to win EXOTIC BET: Flexi Roving Trifecta with 1 & 2 the rovers into 6,7,8,10 (Cost $20, which gives 83.33%) 2 NBN Television Claim 7.00 Craig’s call: LAGUNA BEACH (10) is racing in outstanding form with a brave third in a 1.54.2 mile where he was wide in the final lap followed by an Albion Park victory mid-week. He drops back to the claiming class now and should prove hard to beat. THE MARKET MINOR (1) will appreciate his best draw for some time and hasn’t finished further back than fourth at his past five starts. He is usually competitive against the claiming class so is worth an investment. The interesting runner of the event is the former Perth pacer DEMORALIZER (2), which possesses early speed and makes his debut for trainer Gary Bond. He has had an extensive trial campaign and should give a bold showing first up. NICKYS FALCON (7) finished strongly from a nice trail to get up and win last week and is a winning chance with the same luck in running again tonight. The New South Wales pacer JACKSON GRANT (5) and ABERCROMBIE MORGAN (6) are each way chances in an open race. SUGGESTED BET: LAGUNA BEACH (10) each way EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 1,2,7,10/ 1,2,7,10/ field (Cost $20, which gives 20.83%) 3 Aust. Driver Champ Ht 7.30 Craig’s call: MONEYCOUNTER (8) worked hard out of the gate to lead and won impressively at his Queensland debut last week. Presuming the emergency RIVER VALLEY ROCKET (1) fails to gain a start, he should be trailing the classy 4yo pacer SMARTY JONES (2) so he should receive every chance via the sprint lane. SMARTY JONES (2) trailed the leader throughout and used the sprint lane when he won the Breeders Classic two starts back then was severely checked on the first corner in the GovernorsCup last outing. He is likely to adopt his favourite role as pacemaker and must be respected. COMEONJAN (3) finished solidly from well back when a narrow third to RAPID CRUSADER (12) on Saturday night and rates as an each way chance. LOOSEN THE LOAD (9) and MILLER (10) both are capable of showing up without surprising despite being drawn on the second line. SUGGESTED BET: MONEYCOUNTER (8) each way EXOTIC BET: Flexi Roving Trifecta with 2 & 8 the rovers into 3,9,10,12 (Cost $20, which gives 83.33%) 4 Seelite Windows Final 8.00 Craig’s call: MOTU ARMBRO SCOTT (10) has finished powerfully after making early mistakes in his two starts since coming from Victoria. He ran an eye-catching second to SUNANA ASSET (12) on Wednesday and is capable of going better with a foolproof display. SUNANA ASSET (12) was vying for supremacy when he broke stride at the 300m in the opening round of heats then put in a foolproof display when he dominated his rivals mid-week.He can be risky at times but possesses a brilliant turn of speed and looks hard to beat against this line up. KUMBYA (9) has mixed her form since returning from a spell and followed a runaway victory in the opening round of heats with an ordinary sixth (38m) mid-week where she raced outside of the leader and was struggling before the home turn. She is better than that effort suggests and is a possible improver. WHAT EVER YOU LIKE (13) is the class runner of the field and won easily after leading throughout under the mobile conditions mid-week. He faces a tough handicap of 40m but is still worth thought. COSMIC THUNDER (2) and POETIC DEVICE (3) are the best chances of those horses drawn on the front line. SUGGESTED BET: MOTU ARMBRO SCOTT (10) each way EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 9,10,12,13/ 9,10,12,13/ 2,3,4,6,9,10,11,12,13 (Cost $20, which gives 23.81%) 5 Aust. Pacing Gold 8.30 Craig’s call: ZENAD (6) struggled for his best form in the Inter Dominion heats but was in great form prior with a close up fourth in the Geelong Cup and a game third in the Melbourne Mile. This race is much easier and a forward showing is expected. THE MAELSTROM (4) will also appreciate a drop in class from the Inter Dominion heats and even though he lacks early pace, he should be finishing strongly. VERY COOL (10) led out, took a trail behind South Park Hanover and outgunned that pacer (55.1 first half!) in a 1.54.2 mile last outing. He is not as well drawn here but he must be respected. ULTIMATE MARK (7) races best when he is close to the pace so is unsuited to the outside of the front line draw. He contested the Inter Dominion heats over the past two weeks however so he must be considered as one of the main chances against this easier grade. JACK AND SIMON (5) is the likely leader of the event and races best over the sprint distance. OLIVER ROYAL (1) and MAD MEL (3) are minor place hopes from their good draw on the front line. SUGGESTED BET: ZENAD (6) each way EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 4,6,7,10/ 4,5,6,7,10/ 1,3,4,5,6,7,10 (Cost $20, which gives 25%) 6 ID09 Consolation 9.00 Craig’s call: FLEUR DE LIL (1) had no luck from the inside of the second line when fifth in the opening round of Inter Dominion heats then was headed off at the start when a close up fourth behind Changeover last week. She will find this race a little easier and is drawn to go close. OUR AWESOME ARMBRO (3) would have made the final had he not made an uncharacteristic mistake losing all chance in the opening round of heats. He produced a huge run behind Karloo Mick last week after being wide in the last lap and with recent placed efforts behind Auckland Reactor and Monkey King to his credit in New Zealand, he looks ideally graded here. CINCINNATI KID (9) ran a nice race for fourth in the opening round of heats then had no luck whatsoever last week when he went to the line jogging with no clear run. He is a very underrated pacer and should prove hard to beat here. MISTER SWINGER (4) raced well short of his best form when an ordinary eleventh last week but beat Mr Feelgood comfortably in the Ballarat Cup and ran a huge race for fifth in the Hunter Cup so has the class edge on most of his rivals here. OHOKA UTAH (7) did his share of work in both rounds of the series and RIVERBOAT STAR (8) is a value chance after his fast finishing sixth last week. SUGGESTED BET: FLEUR DE LIL (1) each way EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 1,3,4,9/ 1,3,4,9/ 1,3,4,7,8,9 (Cost $20, which gives 41.66%) 7 Queensland Derby 9.30 Craig’s call: The brilliant New South Wales pacer CAPTAIN JOY (9) led throughout and won the Victoria Derby two starts back. He effortlessly beat an easier field last week and looks set to extend his winning sequence to seven straight here. HILTON FLY HIGH (3) possesses early speed and overcame a poor barrier draw to win both heat and final of the Australian Gold. This race is a little tougher but he should find the lead and will take plenty of catching.RUNAWAY RED (4) produced the run of the race in the Australian Gold when he raced out three wide for the final 1200m and went down fighting. He is very versatile and rates as an each way chance. PRESIDENTIAL LANE (7) impressed when making his Queensland debut but is rising in class and the gritty local pacer ELZAR (11) is not to be underestimated. ATOMS EXIT (2) won the Breeders Classic when he trailed the leader and used the sprint lane so he is a place hope at big odds. SUGGESTED BET: CAPTAIN JOY (9) to win EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 3,9/ 3,4,9/ field (Cost $20, which gives 62.50%) 8 ID09 Grand Final 10.05 Craig’s call: The barrier draw favours local champion BLACKS A FAKE (1), which is aiming for an historic fourth Inter Dominion Championship but he performed well below expectations when the New Zealand Cup winner CHANGEOVER (4) comfortably ran past him last week. CHANGEOVER (4) looked very sharp in that effort on Saturday night and is likely to obtain a trail behind I AM SAM (5) so he must be respected. The champion New Zealand pacer AUCKLAND REACTOR (13) worked very hard to lead and put in a brilliant display to easily defeat WASHAKIE (3) and I AM SAM (5) last week. The barrier draw makes it very difficult but he will make his presence felt. Forgetting reputations and performances prior to the beginning of the series, KARLOO MICK (9) would be the top pick as his efforts over the past two weeks have exceeded that of any other runner of the field. He was attacked by MR FEELGOOD (12) and recorded a brilliant middle half (1200m – 400m) of 56.6 seconds when he clearly outstayed his rivals last week. WASHAKIE (3) possesses early speed and produced an enormous performance behind AUCKLAND REACTOR (13) last week. He is well drawn and rates a value chance. DIAMONDS N FURS (8) was a brilliant heat winner on the opening night and is drawn to trail the likely leader in BLACKS A FAKE (1) so he will receive every chance via the sprint lane. I AM SAM (5) was no match for AUCKLAND REACTOR (13) last week but is drawn to adopt his favourite role being on the outside of the leader and he could fill a place again. SUGGESTED BET: BLACKS A FAKE (1) to win EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 1,4,9,13/ 1,4,9,13/ 1,3,4,5,6,8,9,12,13 (Cost $20, which gives 23.81%) 9 GC Bulletin FFA 10.50 Craig’s call: DECORATED JASPER (4) performed below his best form throughout the Inter Dominion heats but with placed efforts behind the likes of Changeover and Melpark Major in Victoria, he is clearly the horse to beat against this easier grade. The speedy Sydney mare DYMONDEE (1) endured a very tough run and battled on fairly well despite running ninth (12m) last week. She possesses early pace and is ideally drawn so is worth an investment. POWER OF TARA (6) worked hard and ran a big race for sixth (7m) in the Hunter Cup but has been disappointing in three runs since. This race is much easier and he should give a forward showing now. SLIPNSLIDE (5) races best over the mile distance but he has place claims against this line up. DEPEND ON DAVEY (7) faded after enduring a tough run at the Gold Coast last outing but his form since coming from Victoria has been strong and he could run into a place. SUGGESTED BET: DECORATED JASPER (4) to win EXOTIC BET: Flexi Trifecta 1,4/ 1,4,6/ 1,4,5,6,7 (Cost $20, which gives 166%) 10 Garrards Horse/Hound 11.20 Craig’s call: The unbeaten colt FOR A REASON (10) looks to be an outstanding prospect and is clearly the horse to beat again. He endured a wide trip and raced to a big victory in a 1.58.0 mile last week against similar opposition. KARTER BROWN (3) dropped onto the markers, broke stride when working into the clear on the home turn and motored home in the final stages when an eye-catching fourth when on debut. He obviously has ability and is worth following. PLACE OF GOLD (7) is widely drawn but was placed in a race of similar standard last outing and is a minor place hope again. INTHELIGHTOFDAY (2) (Life Sign – Benevolent) is a beautifully bred first starter, which finished second in a recent Albion Park trial for trainer John McCarthy and must be kept safe. DANNIES PROMISE (4) could fill a place with the right luck in running. SUGGESTED BET: FOR A REASON (10) to win EXOTIC BET: Flexi Standout Trifecta with 10 to win from 2,3,4,7 (Cost $20, which gives 166%) Bathurst Sprint Lane: No Daily Double: 5, 7 Quaddie: 4, 5, 6, 7. Expect him to adopt a similar racing pattern here. SPENCER WALLACE (2) took advantage of pole mark to land 1.6m win from Mike Brennan in his heat and has again drawn favourably. Query if he can hold out the speed merchant on his outside but should be in the thick of the action throughout. CUTTHEATTITUDE (8) made it four wins from five starts when racing outside leader for 6.9m win from Special Art in his heat. No doubting his class but could need some luck from this gate. Each-way. LOMBO TATTOO (10) made a mess of the start and always on back foot when 12.5m 2nd to All I Can Be in his heat. Landed 2.1m win from Shootin The Breeze in 1609m Menangle 2R0 (1:58.7) Mar 9.
