He came from the second line and outsprinted them in his heat of this race here last week and will be fitter for two runs from a spell, the prior of those being a tough death seat second to top youngster Franco Newsman here a fortnight ago. THE SYSTEM STAR (10) finished strongly from well back when fourth to DOUGIE RAY (2) in his heat and should have a much better record than his 3 from 20 suggests. THE TRIBUNAL (8) led all the way to win the other heat unimpressively but he should have improvement in him as that was his second run from a break. The second line draw isn’t ideal and he’ll have to be driven for luck if he’s to beat this favourite. Place chances to all other runners. RATINGS: 2 / 10 / 8 / 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 12 place only. An impressive standing start winner on debut at Geelong in January, he then ran a close second in a blistering 1:56.1 to Bells And Whistles at the Valley, then returned from a break of two months with a soft all the way victory at the Valley a fortnight ago. JAR ZINYO (3) battled on gamely for second in that Moonee Valley race and prior to that had impressed in a debut all the way victory at Geelong. He looks the only danger to this favourite. OLE MASTER LOMBO (1) (Modern Art – Mary Mazzini) is an Ahmed Taiba trained debutant who’s been trialling well. He’s out of a handy race mare, related to some good winners and draws well in his first trip to the races. The other first starters are HARMONY PRINCE (4) (Grinfromeartoear – Lady Harfield), a Lance Justice trained colt who’s been trialling moderately; ARTESIAN GLORY (5) (Artesian – Philly Darlz), a John Cauchi trained colt who recently won a Bacchus Marsh trial and is related to two winners; BACHELOR LOMBO (7) (Blissfull Hall – Misty Maiden), a royally bred Geoff Martin trained gelding and recent trial winner whose dam won $245K and beat the colts in the Australian Derby, and has produced 8 winners from 10 previous foals, by far the best of those being the outstanding Lombo Pocket Watch, $1.4 million; and SIGN LANGUAGE (10) (Life Sign – Cams Coup De Grace), a John Justice trained colt who’s out of an American mare who’s produced 3 winners from 5 prior foals, one of them successful in 1:52 – this colt recently ran a distant fourth in a Kilmore trial. His best run so far was when making late ground for third to Bells And Whistles in 1:57.8 for this trip at the Valley four starts back. He disappointed when an odds-on favourite here at his next run, then was given a short break before a battling third when favourite at Shepparton, and a solid death seat second at Maryborough last week. PALERMO (4) is a well bred Peter Tonkin trained Christian Cullen colt who was taken to Tasmania for a debut second in Hobart where he did plenty of work from a second line draw, followed by a Launceston fourth last Sunday when battling on nicely for fourth in a fast 1:58.6. MANGO MAGIC (2) (Modern Art – Trouble She Comes) is a Maree Caldow trained debutant who recently won a Kilmore trial and draws well in this relatively easy heat. KIWI JOE (6) worked wide to the breeze when a distant debut third at Geelong a month ago before sitting in the breeze when a solid second to the talented Jorg Is Best at Warragul last Sunday. He has each way claims. ARTILLERY FIRE (8) made late ground at Maryborough last time and has some chance as well. The other first starters are the Lance Justice trained pair I AM TERROR (3) (Western Terror – Nickel Castle), a recent Bacchus Marsh trial winner in slow time, who’s related to Kendall Castle $103K, Blatant Lie, $410K and Keppel Bay $380K; and BELLARI (5) (Grinfromeartoear – Bellair), a colt whose dam has produced the handy Anipatnight (11 wins) from two previous foals – this fellow has trialled moderately. A talented four year old mare, she took her record to eight wins from 24 starts when flashing home late to score from the mobile at Maryborough last week and will be further improved by that, her first run for six weeks. JOE BRO (10) is a Peter Manning trained gelding who won a hat trick of races impressively in January/February last year but hasn’t been seen since failing at Charlton more than twelve months ago. He’d probably win this if he produced that form. Stablemate JOULE COUNT (2), a recent Bendigo winner, battled on gamely when cut down late by Shiraz Cabernet at Terang last time and is sure to give a bold sight from the pole. Ex-Kiwi LOCKHEED (4) has been placed in 2 of 4 since coming here, the latest when galloping after the start in a mobile at Cranbourne and running extremely well. He’s won from the stand and may appreciate the switch to racing behind the tapes. JUSTACHANDON (1) has been luckless in three runs since a Kilmore victory early last month and looks best of the others with honourable mentions to HILTON GEMMA (3), MAORI SUNSHINE (5), COST ME A QUID (7), MONI BEA (11). She was then placed in strong races at Echuca and Cobram before having absolutely no luck in the Queensland Derby at the Gold Coast, then did well when sitting in the breeze and finishing off in 27.5 to beat moderates in her last start Charlton success. She was one of our top fillies as a two year old and seems to be back to her best. KISSMECATIE (9) is a talented and consistent filly who’s won four of seven this season with three placings. She beat Keppel Bay impressively at the Valley back in February, then scored at Shepparton before sitting wide without cover for a gallant and close third to FLYIN INDI AIR (2) at the Valley over the unsuitable mile trip. She found the front and was never threatened when winning at Geelong at her latest rum. From this good trailing draw, she’ll be sitting just off the pace and has a powerful finish. LIFE IN THEFASTLANE (6) has raced well for the Fitzpatrick stable in NSW and QLD in recent times – she beat Keppel Bay in an APG heat at the Gold Coast early last month, then ran third from the breeze in the final before finding trouble in the QLD Oaks last time. Back with owner John Yeomans, she impressed in a fast Cranbourne trial victory last weekend and has enough gate speed to cross these if so desired. STERITA (5) also returns from a Queensland trip. She won back-to-back races at Geelong and Stawell before finishing second in both heat and final of the APG at the Gold Coast to For Dear Life, then copped a check in her battling unplaced effort in the Queensland Oaks last time. She also has blistering gate speed. QUEEN OF FIRE (8) has raced four times for a debut win at Stawell five weeks ago, a heat win and final and second in the Bathurst Gold Bracelet, then was far too good for moderate opposition from the second line at Horsham last week. Chances also to handy NSW filly INTIMATE MOMENTS (1), recent Moonee Valley winner FLYIN INDI AIR (2), and the Peter Tonkin trained CORLEONE (10), who’s gone okay in two Tasmanian runs since resuming. She has a blistering finishing sprint if held up for that last run. ALBERT JACCKA (4) has been racing out of his depth in recent times - against the likes of Smoken Up, Bold Cruiser and Our Malabar, and will appreciate this drop in grade. He used the sprint lane when a fast finishing second to Just Callme Cullen at Kilmore two runs back, then was badly held up last time when unplaced behind Smoken Up in the Geelong Rocket. YES I CAN (2) found the lead when an impressive first up winner here on Ballarat Cup night back in January, then wasn’t seen again until down the track finishes at Kilmore and here over the past couple of weeks. He wasn’t disgraced when running fifth last time and is a bold front runner who draws to be there. JUBILEE BALL (3) who won 10 of 16 last season, got to the line well when third to Mister Rhys in his first up effort here last week, will be fitter and draws nicely. WALTON VAN (12) never runs a bad race - there was a lot to like about his solid finishing effort when third to Luv Tha Aces Lombo in fast time at the Valley a fortnight ago and he looks better suited on this bigger track. HARRYS LASS (6), FLAMIN TACT (7), APENNYSPENT (8) and HESA BUZZIN (9) are also in the mix. RATINGS: 10 / 4 / 2, 3, 12 / 6 / 7, 8, 9. She ran second here to Franco Newsman in the heat, then chased home well when second to the outstanding Captain Joy in the final, with Living On Fire third. She then won a strong fillies race at Terang before finishing third to Living On Fire in the Caduceus Club Cup at the Valley in February, and resumes from a break of eight weeks off a recent Kilmore trial victory. IMA SPICEY LOMBO (6) is an outstanding Paul Fitzpatrick trained filly who’s won 11 of 20. She won the Pink Bonnet at Harold Park back in August, was successful in the Raith Memorial at Harold Park in January, then won a NSW Oaks heat before galloping out in the final. After a break, she scored first up at Menangle then did a stack of work early when rating 1:58.6 to win the Queensland Oaks last time at the Gold Coast. It should be a good battle between these top fillies. Rating just behind that pair is LEWISIENNA JO (4), who beat ANA(3) in the SA Oaks back in January and resumed with an outstanding come-from-behind Horsham success eleven days ago. ANA (3) hasn’t raced to her outstanding juvenile form this season but showed good signs at Geelong a fortnight ago when driven with a trail and finishing well for third to Kissmecatie. Best of the others are DREAMS OF HEAVEN (2), who was one of our top fillies last season and should be improved by two handy runs from a spell, and ELIXIR (10), who was wide to the breeze when third in the Queensland Oaks, made a mistake in the Queensland Derby the week after, then scored a hollow victory against moderates at Kilmore last week.
