Herald Sun Form Guide : April 25th 2009
heraldsun.com.au Flemington TODAY PROS TALKING Tom Waterhouse BOOKMAKER MANHATTANRAIN (Rand R4 No. 1): Followed Golden Slipper placing with an emphatic victory last start and he looks the best bet on a great day of racing. John Moloney TRAINER PAPERCUT(Flem R1 No. 5): He’s a nice horse. He hasn’t really matched up to the better horses, at least not last start. I think Solchow will be hard to beat but we’re some chance, especially if there’s a bit of rain about. POET’S VOICE (Flem R5 No. 5): He had a suspensory ligament issue and he’s on the comeback trail. His leg is fine now but it’s a matter of getting him back to where he was. He’s going OK. I was pretty happy with his workout during the week. AMBERINO(Rand R3 No. 7): If the track is dead to slow that will beOKfor her. This is a test, going Sydney way the first time, and she’s also had to travel back from Adelaide and up to Sydney. She seems to have handled it pretty well.Wethought it was a good time to strike while she’s in form. Symon Wilde TRAINER HISSING SID (Flem R3 No. 3): We’ve held him back a bit because we want him ready for the 2350m of the Warrnambool Cup. Tome he’s racing like a real stayer. He really ground to the line last start. If there’s not too much rain he’ll run a really good race. YOUTHFULHIGH (R4 No. 6): She’s a beauty, so versatile. She’s raced her way out of Saturday mares grade and probably not good enough for Group class, so we’re experimenting in this race over some ground. I think if we ride her cold she’ll run it out. HOT JOCKS First-up bid: Vigor returns from a spell at Flemington today after winning five on the trot last campaign. MIDNIGHT OIL with TIM HABEL TRACK: Good 3 PENETROMETER: 4.60 Inside 4.60, outside 4.58. RAIL: Out 8m RAIL LAST SATURDAY: Out 5m LAST TIME OUT 8m: August 9 RAINFALL: 2.4mm for week RADAR: Showers increasing to rain 1 2 (5) setting the race up for swoopers like KEANO (1) and BURLY GRIF- FEN (2). Keano is a classy colt resuming since failing over 1600m in the Alister Clark. He’s won on dead ground, was impressive winning at 1400m here in December and is on trial for a Brisbane campaign. Burley Griffen was below par last time at the Valley but his one exposure to heavy ground resulted in a Sandown win. FOLAU (8) won his maiden first-up and has a Moonee Valley slow track second to Fernandina. ON-PACERS: Solchow, Tully Dreamer, Papercut. SWOOPERS: Keano, Burley Griffen. SUGGESTED BET: Quinellas 1 with 2, 3, 8. Cranbourne two runs back, is the only runner with soft track form. But BRIEFED (1) won on genuine dead ground at Sale on debut and he had a hard luck tale at Caulfield when stewards reported his saddle moved early, significantly restricting jockey Mark Flaherty, yet charged home late. The 1400m looks made to order. EXTRA ZERO (3) ran on well on debut in the same race. SET FOR FAME (9) thrashed a five-horse Saturday Hamilton field on debut, streaking away after leading. This is a lot harder but the stable produced a future star here last Saturday in Black Caviar. Blinkers go on FLAWLESS GEM (8) and ZAPURB (10) who can improve. BRADRawiller is riding well and is at good odds to win today’s TAB Sportsbet Jockey Challenge. THE MARKET $2.15 $3.90 $7.00 $8.50 $8.50 $14.00 $21.00 $26.00 Steven Arnold Brad Rawiller Any other indiv. jockey Steven King Nicholas Hall Dwayne Dunn Dale Smith Ibrahim Gundogdu bool Cup. He worked to the line strongly over 1800m last week and is looking for the extra 200m. He won at Caulfield in July on a seven-day back- up and is a slow track winner at the ’Bool.OURSMOKING JOE (1) hasn’t won a race since February 2006 but he’s in a winnable race here and has performed well in two runs from a spell. The more rain the better. 3 ON-PACERS: Fearless Babe, Set For Fame. SWOOPERS: Briefed, Royal Dalton, Extra Zero, Flawless Gem, Zapurb. SUGGESTED BET: Briefed straight out. HISSING SID (3) is primed to win this in preparation for next month’s hometown Warrnam- LITTLE or no exposed wet track form here.ROYALDALTON(2), who won on a slow track at GOOD race with loads of speed with SOLCHOW (3), TULLY DREAMER (4) and PAPERCUT ACCUMULATE (2) is a good galloper but has been injury troubled. He’s looking for the 2000m now. AGAR- KAR (6) is in peak form and handles rain affected ground. ON-PACERS: Escape Artist, Hum- away. SWOOPERS: Our Smoking Joe, Hissing Sid, Agarkar. SUGGESTED BET: Hissing Sid straight out. 4 5 today. He’s very consistent and han- dles soft ground. South Australian visitors BRAD STAR (1) and KEEP- THEDREAMALIVE (7) are last start winners sure to be competitive. ARA- PAHO MISS (5) hasn’t won since scoring in the Oaks here in 2007 but ran on well at Caulfield last time and should be in the finish. If the heavens open SENTIRE (4) would come into contention. ON-PACERS: Youthful High, Kin- charm, Vindicating. SWOOPERS: Brad Star, Grand Des- tiny, Sentire, Arapaho Miss, Keepthe- dreamalive, Ladies In Luck. SUGGESTED BET: Grand Destiny straight out. SASSO (11) is drawn 10 so can go either side. He had no luck when resuming at Caulfield, has good dead-track form and was placed at his only straight track run behind King Hoaks and IMASHADOW (13) who is also a major threat. Imashadow pro- tested unsuccessfully at Caulfield and is very consistent. But he’s yet to win beyond 1100m. TARGET (17) flopped in Sydney but go on his fast- finishing third over 1000m in stakes class down the straight here in March and he’s a chance. O’REILLY’S CLOCK (9) loves the wet and has a good fresh record and will be charg- ing home. WITH a strong north-westerly forecast the outside rail is likely to come into play here. GRAN ON-PACERS: Posadas, Poet’s Voice, Danzylum. SWOOPERS: Falaise, Bowhunter, O’Reilly’s Clock, Gran Sasso, Not A Copy, Imashadow, Target. SUGGESTED BET: Gran Sasso each-way. THE BANKERS ON PRECEDENT: HISSING SID (Race 3 No. 3) ON VIDEO: GRAN SASSO (Race 5 No. 11) ON POTENTIAL: PRECEDENCE (Race 6 No. 1) $50 FLEXI QUADDIE FOR 26.04%: 9, 11, 13, 17/1, 3, 4, 7/2, 3, 9, 10/ 1, 2, 9 GRAND DESTINY (3) won this race last year with 56kg and rises just 1kg for a repeat win 6 PRECEDENCE (1) rises 3kg on his last-start win at Caulfield but he looks a bright staying pro- a clear run in the straight in the Victoria Handicap at her Australian debut when she looked to have plenty to offer. She is a proven soft-tracker in New Zealand, winning at Group 1 level in fillies and mares class. VIGOR (3) has been freshened since racking up five city wins on the trot, four here. This is his cameo appear- ance before the spring, so if he is going to measure up in Group races he needs to go close. He handles all conditions. CHASM (2) is a big finisher who just faded on his run last time behind Masked Assassin in the Victoria Handicap. He’s untried on worse than dead ground. PLAY- WRIGHT (9) was poor in Sydney but his second in the Blamey Stakes to Largo Lad before that is good form for this. 7 ON-PACERS: Miss Badoura, The Tiger. SWOOPERS: Chasm, Vigor, Play- wright, Special Mission, Aztec Smytzer. SUGGESTED BET: Special Mission each-way. the place to be by race eight. Cats Whisker has class on her side, is resuming from a Group 1 placing and won on debut on soft ground. About Ready is race fit after a strong first-up win racing on the pace. STARFISH (9) has been placed at both her straight runs. ALTITUDE (4), FLYING TESSIE (6), and TAKE ALL OF ME (10) are place hopes. ON-PACERS: About Ready, Altitude, Berryland. SWOOPERS: Cats Whisker, Flying Tessie, Indirect, Starfish, Take All Of Me. 8 SUGGESTED BET: Quinellas 1, 2, 9. CATS WHISKER (1) and ABOUT READY (2) have drawn the outside gates which may be spect. He barged through a tight gap to beat BELLABACI (11) who gets a 3.5kg swing in the weights. Bellabaci is one of three Danny O’Brien-trained runners and all have chances. BUF- FETT (4) is very one-paced so is suited by the trip, while PENTIRE POINT (7) is just out of maiden class but shows potential. BERLIOZ (3) ran a game race in the WA Derby and looks a threat. The query runner is Kiwi visitor BAKUP (2) who only won in restricted class at Hastings last time but is in an astute stable. ON-PACERS: High Kingczar, Vin- tage King. SWOOPERS: Precedence, Bakup, Berlioz, Buffett, Bellabaci. SUGGESTED BET: Precedence each-way. IF the forecast rain arrives SPECIAL MISSION (10) may be the value runner. She didn’t get HERALD SUN SUPERFORM LIFTOUT THE MAIL Tim Habel STRAIGHT OUT FLEMINGTON (Race 3 No. 3): Hissing Sid is ready to peak for his hometown Warrnambool Cup on Thursday week and can win this on the way. Matt Stewart QUINELLA RANDWICK(Race 5 No. 10, No. 13): If the track is soft, as expected, I reckon Sousa will break them up and turn with a real kick. Only danger, for mine, is Whobegotyou, who was a moral beaten in the Doncaster. Michael Manley STRAIGHT OUT RANDWICK(Race 5 No. 10): Whobegotyou is up against either rivals from last week’s Doncaster who he meets far better on the weights, or three-year-olds who he is superior to. Nick Quinn STRAIGHT OUT RANDWICK(Race 1 No. 1): Ortensia returned this campaign with a narrow victory at Caulfield and followed that up with a devastating victory last start against a very similar field.
