McLean said she was a special person who had been ill for two years. ‘‘The win was a bit emotional because it’s been a big couple of weeks,’’ he said. He said Broadways Best deserved ‘‘Aunty Joan’s’’ win, his first Group 1 victory. ‘‘We’ve always known she has the ability to win a big race, but she just needed to get the monkey off her back,’’ he said. McLean, the son of former Carlton and Richmond tough manRicky, trains two horses. The other is Broadways Best’s half sister Broadways Play, who won the Terang Cup at her last start in February. Broadways Best will be set for next month’s four-year- old mares’ Super Series and the Australian Oaks, at Victoria’s new Tabcorp Park at Melton, in July.
