ELUSIVE CHARM (4) was freshened up before leading early then breaking at Maryborough. Very honest filly, include in multiples along with BREVILLIAN (5) who was a strong effort from outside the leader here last week. A big watch on AMIRI (8) who debuts for Jenny Johnson. IM CHILLED (8) led all the way at his debut before finishing on well at Kilmore last start. Good chance. WISHING WEARL (6) has been in the placings six times in NSW. Harder here but don’t dismiss lightly. Trifecta chances to IMAGUNNADOGOOD (3) who is resuming and RONNIES WAGON (7). OUTPUNCH ENCHANTER (2) is an Earl - Sunbeam Song gelding debuting for Chris Alford. Down the track in a recent trial. SPRINT LANE with ADAM HAMILTON A T LEAST four pacers could start favourite in Friday night’s Group 1 Vicbred final for three-year- old colts and geldings at Moonee Valley. Unlike the fillies’ equiva- lent, won easily by $1.70 favourite Broadways Best on Friday night, the colts and geldings’ final has loads of depth. Garnet River showed he was the most exciting horse with a blistering burst to win the first semi-final and Presi- dential Lane and Village Of Dreams also did enough to be major threats in the final, given kind barrier draws. Villagem used the sprint lane to upset the heavily backed favourite Living On Fire in the second semi. There was also plenty to like about Hilton Fly High’s third after doing all of the mid-race work outside of the leader. T + HE footy flavour at Moonee Valley on Friday extended beyond Ricky McLean’s Vicbred final win with Broadways Best. Russell Cook, who played 164 games as a ruckman for South Melbourne, was victorious with his emerging star Make Waves. Hot form: Auckland Reactor starred at the NZ Harness Jewels meeting on Saturday. McLean, who played 58 games with Carlton and Richmond, rated Broadways Best’s wins in the Victoria Oaks and Vicbred finals in the past five weeks as the equal of any buzz he enjoyed in his footy career. H ARNESS Racing Vic- toria chief executive John Anderson has approved Australia’s new handicap- ping system, which comes into force on September 1. Anderson said the key objective of the system was to extend the racing lives of horses. Key reforms include: A PROVISION for automatic dropping back in class. REMOVAL of multiple pen- alties for wins when racing out of class. HANDICAPPING scales for two-year-olds to be replaced with specific programming conditions. NO CARRY-OVER penalties for three-year-olds into their four-year-old seasons. The revamp has been 18 months in the making. Full details are at www.harness.- org.au C HAMPION trainer Mark Purdon made New Zeal- and’s Harness Jewels Day his own at Ashburton on Saturday. Purdon snared three winners—Auckland Reactor, Joyfuljoy and Pocaro — and two quinellas on the nine-race card. Auckland Reactor capped another amazing season with a 1min 53.8sec mile, and closing splits of 54.6sec (800m) and 25.4sec (400m). The four-year-old’s record is now 27 starts for 24 wins and two seconds. NZ’s best mare, Kiwi Inge- nuity, sizzled over a mile in her final in 1min 52.1sec. It was the second fastest mile ever in the southern hemisphere, behind only Smoken Up’s 1min 51.9sec at Menangle last year.
