WILEY JASPER (3) led all the way to win a better race than this at Cranbourne a couple of months back and hasn’t been far away in strong races since. He led from a wider alley than this and went quickly in the lead when fourth to talented Palais Du Louvre at Kilmore last time and if he leads over the sprint trip here around this tighter circuit, will take a power of beating. NO MACHN AROUND (8) (Mach Three – Murray Flier) is an Ahmed Taiba trained colt having his first start. He qualified when beaten a length by top filly Rocknrolla at Kilmore in April and meets beatable opposition at his first trip to the races. The other first starter LIFES JUST ACE (4) (Aces N Sevens – Lifes Just Magic), was placed in a recent Ballarat trial. A Michael Stanley trained colt, he’s sure to have ability. FAROUK (5) is dropping in grade from his honest fifth to Henchman at the Valley a fortnight ago and looks hard to beat. SCARLET JASPER (3) won three races earlier this season but has been out of form in recent times. There was money for him but he began badly in a Bendigo stand last time and this looks much more his cup of tea – the handy draw and mobile conditions will suit. SUMMER DREAMING (8) won a similar race at Bendigo in May and was a luckless third here two starts back before making late ground from well back when mid-field recently at Cranbourne. CHARDONNAY LASS (2) hasn’t started since finishing second in one of these races at Horsham in April but has the draw and Glenn Douglas usually produces them ready to win first up. He flew out from the tapes to easily lead all the way when beating IMSOCLASSY (5) here three runs back, then put up a giant run to be placed behind LELIS BOY (10) at Cranbourne, before again blowing the start when a handy mobile sixth at Cranbourne last week. LELIS BOY (10) is an honest gelding who’s in career best form – he comes off a solid Ballarat victory and a last start fast finishing Cranbourne success over STAR SPANGLED RAMA (8) and JOHNCARLO (7). STAR SPANGLED RAMA (8) is in the mix along with the unreliable ABOY NAMED CHERYL (4), who has trouble trotting all the way but looks good when he does. He went fast in the lead when cut down late by quality performers Christian Melody and Waiona when third over the sprint journey at Cranbourne last time and is overdue to win one. THE GUNSTAR (7) has raced three times for Dean Braun for three handy efforts, the latest when finishing nicely for fifth in a hot Cranbourne affair behind Charlies Dream last Saturday night. He draws awkwardly but won’t settle too far away in this small field. REBECCA DON (3) had a purple patch earlier this season, winning eight races, but has only been plodding in recent times. It was an improved effort from her where she came wide from the second line and was fourth at Bendigo at her latest run, when forced off the track in the final lap. She draws best of the three main winning chances and Daryl Douglas is sure to produce an aggressive drive. He’s racing in career best form and will be hard to beat. LIFE BOAT (8) has won two of eight in this, his first season of racing. He sandwiched a Yarra Valley Super Sires third to Living On Fire and Garnet River with Cranbourne successes in May, then found the class a bit strong when not disgraced in Semi-final and Final of that series five weeks ago. BRATSKI (4) ran home nicely for third at Cranbourne a fortnight ago, then was held up and not far away at Charlton last Friday. This is his best draw for some time. SAHARA MISS (7) followed seconds at Cranbourne by leading most of the way there last Saturday night where she slowed them up and sprinted away to win easily, but this looks a harder race from where she’s drawn. The first starter is ARMBRO CRUISER (2) (Armbro Operative – Del Shipp), a Chris Hunter trained filly whose dam won six races and has produced two previous foals for as many winners. A Ballarat winner back in March, he was wide in the last lap when a solid third at Mildura two starts back, then not all that far away when unplaced in a much stronger race than this at Cranbourne last week. GORDONS VILLE (7) began quickly to lead all the way here a month ago, then was again fast out before making an early mistake when down the track at Cranbourne last time. He looks nicely suited against these. VIGILANTE (1), who hasn’t won for nearly two years, ran second to Mr Clancy in a Moonee Valley day affair back in February, then fourth here before going for a spell. He resumed with a Cranbourne standing start fifth last weekend and will be improved by that outing. OVERPASSING (8) shows up on occasions and resumes into a winnable race from the good trailing draw. GOLDEN GRINDER (5) was a deadheat winner at Yarra Valley before becoming badly held up when a close sixth at Kilmore last week. He looks nicely graded. He sat behind the leader and dropped out when last in a Terang Tontine heat at his first run back from a spell but has since scored easily in a trial here. SELECTIONS: LORD OF ABBEY (1), On Fire (8), Lahaini (4), Lombo Air Express (7). RATINGS: 1, 8 / 4? 7? / 6, 9. He finished just behind the placegetters in a Tontine heat and Semi Final, then had no luck when sixth to Jaccka Sandy in the final at Geelong last time, and will appreciate the class drop. LORD RODDICK (1) showed ability earlier this season when coming here from NZ, and was well in the betting when badly shut in and finishing at the rear when resuming at Cranbourne last weekend. From the pole, he rates a strong winning chance. ISLAND STORM (11) is a most consistent locally trained horse who won his fifth race for the season at Cobram, three starts back, then was luckless here before a solid third on this circuit last week. He grades well against these. Each way chance to the KING OF STYX (7), who’s never far away in these races. SELECTIONS: OUR SAND FLY (5), Lord Roddick (1), Island Storm (11), King Of Styx (7). RATINGS: 5 / 1 / 11 / 7 / 2, 6 / 8. He draws to break his maiden status. PRINCE ZET (8) was wide in the last lap when fourth at Yarra Valley, then made late ground from an awkward second line draw for fifth at Kilmore last time. As the only runner on the second line, he’ll take up a handy position close to the lead here and looks nicely suited. OLD WARANDYTE ROAD (7) is a tough one-paced gelding who rarely runs a bad race. He got well back and was never a factor over the sprint journey here last week when a heavily backed favourite behind Artorious, but looks much better suited this time over the short trip and the wide alley shouldn’t worry him too much in this small field. MOST HAPPY JASPER (3) hasn’t been far away in recent runs, draws nicely and is working up to a win. SELECTIONS: AZARANKA (1), Prince Zet (8), Old Warandyte Road (7), Most Happy Jasper (3).
