This C1 affair should be dominated by the four three year olds who have each won three races, but draw the four worst barriers. STAGHORN FLAT (13) beat On Any Day at Shepparton back in April, then ran an outstanding third in the Australian Derby at Launceston behind Village Of Dream and Living On Fire, then returned to Victoria for an all the way victory at Bendigo six weeks later. He didn’t have much luck in a Super Sires Semi Final behind Garnet River at the Valley after that, was put aside and resumes off a Bendigo trial second. MACH TWAIN (12) is a speedy youngster who’s won three of his latest five outings. He won heat and final of the Mildura Guineas in April, then failed in a strong Moonee Valley affair before beating the talented Monte Carlo Lombo in all the way fashion at Cranbourne at his first start for seven weeks. At his latest run, he led when cut down late by From Day One at Ballarat a fortnight ago, and it will be interesting to see how he goes from behind this time. ALLWEVNEED (11) is a late bloomer who’s come to the fore in recent times, winning three of his latest six outings. A tough Stawell victory when wide in the last lap was followed by strong placings at Ballarat, then he did a power of work in the breeze when a convincing Stawell winner last week. AS IT IS IN HEAVEN (10) is a talented filly who won at Bendigo three starts back, then was luckless in a strong race at the Valley before working to the lead and running a 28.4 third split when cut down late by Holdmehat at Maryborough last week. Best of the front markers and older horses is GO MILO (5), who’s a one paced staying type. Ratings: 13? / 11, 12 / 10 / 5. He come off a 1:55.4 Menangle mile win in a heat of the NSW Breeders and was wide to the breeze in the final when just failing to run down Cuttheattitude in 1:55.1 in the final. His prior wins included the NSW Sires Stakes at Menangle in 1:56 and the Youthful Stakes at Moonee Valley earlier this season. OUR FALCONS A TACT (12) is a handy three year old, who won against his own age group at Shepparton and Ballarat before a battling sixth on that circuit last time where he worked to the lead. He may do better here with a sit. BLITZEM LASS (10) is a dual winning three year old filly who comes off a hat trick of placings into a winnable race. Best of the older brigade may be BOOKMAKERS GLORY (2), who wasn’t far away on debut at Cranbourne a month ago and has won a trial there since. Ratings: 13 / 10, 12 / 2? He draws better than his main rivals. SUMMANUS (9) has won twice from four starts and looked good in his easy Shepparton success last week. LIVING ON ICE (10) had moderate form before an easy Geelong victory last week and is an improving youngster with strong claims. GOODTIME JASPER (3) followed a fast finishing Charlton success with a solid heat victory at Stawell where he worked hard to the breeze and held off a strong late challenge from improving filly EFFECTIVE TORQUE (4). That was from the second line and he’ll appreciate a draw from which he may even find the front. At his first start for the season, RADICAL ASSASSIN (9) led all the way to win the other heat, completing a well spaced hat trick and taking his record to five wins from seven starts. He draws to sit just off the pace and will be even fitter. EFFECTIVE TORQUE (4) was shuffled back in the run and wide in the last lap when a gallant second in her heat to GOODTIME JASPER (3), then finished second at Horsham on Wednesday. She looks a chance of going one better from this draw. THE RED OPAL (1) looked good in his first up Ballarat victory a fortnight ago, then only battled when fourth in his heat, and from this draw should get a softer trip. Best of the others are MISTER MIRIAM (6) and MISS ATHENS (7), who ran third in each of their heats at Stawell and are on the improve. Ratings: 3 / 9 / 4 / 1 / 7 / 6. He should lead again, and is the one they have to beat. EMM HARVEY (8) wasn’t over-impressive in narrow victories at Ballarat and a Moonee Valley day affair before a luckless fifth in a strong 3YO race here a fortnight ago. He drops in grade, the Tonkin stable is in form, and he may get a nice run behind the favourite and likely leader. ON ANY DAY (5) went back-to-back at Shepparton and Kilmore before being out-sprinted by smart youngster Village Of Dreams when second in a strong field at Bendigo last weekend. He looks the other main winning chance, with place claims at least to PARTYWITHTHEDEVIL (2), UNCLE KRACKER (6), SUNROSE MARY (9), JOHNORAMA (10) and GEORGE STREET LAD (12). This field is no where near as strong as what he beat last time. SINGASONGASIXPENCE (8) was miles back in the run and wide in the last lap when a fast finishing third to Jilliby Prince here last week and looks the main danger. He had no luck at his prior run when unplaced here behind VILLAGE PUNGEE (10) and before that was a tough Shepparton winner over Jaccka Clive. ISLAND TANGO (6) is a consistent gelding who won a Moonee Valley MO over the mile beating VILLAGE PUNGEE (10) and SINGASONGASIXPENCE (8) four starts back, and he comes off a close fourth to VILLAGE PUNGEE (10) here when handing the lead up to that fellow and battling on to be beaten a length. He resumes from a six week break off a Bacchus Marsh trial victory last weekend. ROYAL STEEL (3) has a strong chance of beating this favourite as he goes best when in front and draws to be there. He worked to the lead when a fast Maryborough sprint winner three starts back, weakened after a tough trip in the breeze in a Terang Tontine heat after that, then was wide to sit outside the leader when cut down late into third place by Jaccka Sandy over the sprint trip at Geelong last week. COASTAL (10) won at Geelong, then scored an all the way Tontine heat win at Terang before finishing second to Jaccka Sandy in their Semi- final when wide and sustaining a flat tyre, and there was nothing wrong with his fourth when favourite in the Final of that series at Geelong where he drew awkwardly on the second line and was wide in the final circuit. At his latest run, he led from a wide gate and ran too quickly when a weakening sixth to Mister Zion in a track record 1:56.8 for this trip here on opening day, a fortnight ago. Next best is TOGETHER WE DO (4), a consistent gelding who comes off tough placings at Yarra Valley and Ballarat and draws to sit on a solid speed. This field is no stronger than what he’s been beating and he’s an improving type who should be sitting just off the pace here when they settle. PRINCE ZET (6) had the run of the race when a battling third in a strong Shepparton affair last week and has each way claims along with TIRUS (2), who was placed in one of four late last season and resumes off a Kilmore trial victory last week where he finished off in 28.9. FIREINTHESKY (10) was a Geelong winner three starts back, then placed at Geelong before weakening after a wide trip in a strong Kilmore affair last Monday and he’ll find this more to his liking. THE BROWNHOUSE KID (11) won at Forbury Park on debut in May before a battling standing start back mark fourth eleven days ago at Maryborough. He’ll be improved by that run.
