The Jayne Davies trained MIAMI KHAN (8) was having her fourth race start when eased from this draw to mid-field and battling on okay for a second in her heat to all the way winner BUNDY BABE (9), who goes to the second line this time. MIAMI KHAN (8) will be improved by four runs to date while BUNDY BABE (9) is also a lightly raced filly who has winning claims again. OUR JASPER (7) was restrained from a wide draw and made late ground for fourth in that heat, then finished stoutly from well back when second over the longer trip at Cobram last Monday. The sprint journey and wide alley here are against him, but he’s an improving type. MY PACIFIC RAINBOW (1), a stablemate of MIAMI KHAN (8), had the run of the race to win the slower heat and is another filly who’s only raced four times and will benefit from her experiences. Best of the others is HARDWARE HUNTER (11), who was badly held up and should have won the slow heat but only plodded when favourite at Cobram last Monday. ICE PLUNGE (5), BROTHER FRANCIS (10) and SOUND EDITION (12) round out the winning chances in what looks a ‘raffle’ race. Ratings: 8, 9 / 1, 7 / 11 / 5, 10, 12 / 2. He trailed wide from the rear when impressively winning at Horsham a month ago, followed with a second to the smart Monte Carlo Lombo here, then came from well back when second in a Kilmore sprint affair before a last start Ballarat second to Knight Crusader where he again came from near last over the sprint journey. The longer distance of this trip will be right up his alley and he looks the clear top pick. SCENTED (6) is never far away but finds it hard to win these days. Her latest victory was in a Moonee Valley day affair in March 2008 but she’s been placed on ten occasions since and comes off a death seat Yarra Valley second and a Kilmore fourth during the week. TOTALLY CHEEKY (2) trailed wide in the last lap and ran home solidly from his second line draw when a close third at Cobram last Monday and is an improver who draws to break through. VILLAGE PATROL (8) joined up with Daryl Douglas for a low grade victory here a fortnight ago and is an improver who draws to sit just off the pace and use the sprint lane. Each way chances to THE GOLDEN LORD (4), who’s resuming from a short break (placed here two starts back); last start Echuca placegetter SKI SKIPPER (7); handy squaregaiter YENTLS STAR (9); JUSTABRITTMORE (10), who’s shown up in a couple of recent runs; and YELLOW ROSES (11), who ran second to the smart Artorius here two starts back before failing after a tough trip at Kilmore during the week. He draws awkwardly but is suited by the trip and looks hard to beat. His main rival here is ETON BROMAC (7), who has an equivalent form line – he scored nicely on debut at Kilmore, then was wide in a fast last split when second at Yarra Valley at his latest run. With the two favourites drawn awkwardly WAR EMBLEM (1) and STILL SMILIN (6) come into the race. WAR EMBLEM (1) finished a distant second to eventual final winner Grinnersawinner when debuting in a Super Sires heat here five weeks ago, then was luckless in a Semi Final at Tabcorp Park before failing to handle the tight Echuca track from his back row draw when favourite and never a factor a fortnight ago. It should be a different matter this time from the good alley. STILL SMILIN (6), who won a consolation of the Bathurst Gold Crown, was fifth when wide in a strong race at Cranbourne before working hard from a second line draw to lead at Young last week when outbattled in a fast 28.6 last quarter. SIR HUTCHY (9) looks best of the others. The first starter is QUEEN MIA (3) (Pacific Fella – Amore Mio), an Ian Ward trained filly who’s been placed in a couple of recent Cobram trials. A talented David Aiken trained three year old filly, she won three races earlier this season, the latest of those at Kilmore in March, then was lucklessly unplaced in a Moonee Valley Saturday night 3YO affair before going for a spell. Following good trial efforts, she was favourite from the inside of the second line when resuming and a luckless fourth at Yarra Valley ten days ago, but it should be a different matter here this time from the good alley, and against moderate opposition. MASTER OPERATIVE (2) has had 28 starts for one win and ten placings and that pretty much exemplifies his ability. He came from well back when second over this trip at Kilmore last time and except for this favourite, is meeting similar opposition. DREAM HOLME (5) ran second at Terang three starts back, then found trouble in a race at Kilmore before sitting wide in the last lap and battling on well for fourth here a fortnight ago. He has each way claims along with PERFECT SHOT (6), who won a moderate race here in April and has been placed twice at Kilmore in two runs from a short break – the latter of those when beaten under a length by rising star Strident. Place claims at least to every other runner. Ratings: 1 / 2 / 5, 6 / 8, 10, 11 / 3? 4. He’ll be handy enough from the draw and it’s up to talented young reinsman Jason Hackett to shake him clear at the right time. PUNT HIGH (10) is a more than handy gelding who’s been placed in 11 of 17, winning four of those. He hasn’t started since back-to-back seconds at Cobram and here in February but has been trialling okay and gets the services of master reinsman Gavin Lang. Ex-Kiwi ASMOOTH CAP (5) had disappointed in three Australian starts before coming out of the trail to outlast talented youngster We Dare To Dream here a fortnight ago. Daryl Douglas retains the drive and this fellow will be further improved as that was only his second run this time in. FLIGHTTONULLY (6) is a tough mare who sat in the breeze outside WESTERN CONNECTION (4) to beat her in a Yarra Valley stand two starts back, then wasn’t far away when favourite and fourth from the mobile at Cranbourne last weekend. WESTERN CONNECTION (4) beat FLIGHTTONULLY (6) at Cranbourne three starts back and may do better here if she takes a sit, although there was nothing wrong with her second last time. The query runner is JENNAS FETISH (11), a three time winner this season who returned from a Tasmanian visit for a luckless unplaced effort in a strong Moonee Valley Saturday night 4YO a fortnight ago. He races from the in-form Lisa Miles stable and must be respected. Ratings: 8 / 5, 10? / 4, 6 / 11 / 1, 3, 12. He looks ideally suited against these and has the gate speed to get across and set them a task. VILLAGE GLOW (2) took the eye with a fast finishing come-from-behind second to Bad All Over in a 1:56.3 sprint affair at Tabcorp Park last week and she’s an improving mare who draws to win. VINTAGE JAG (8) is a consistent and talented gelding who’s won 10 of 40 and scored his eighth success from 19 starts this season when leading all the way at Bendigo at his latest start, a month ago. He’s not as well suited from the second line as he likes to race close to the lead, but he certainly has class in his favour and shouldn’t be too far back in the run from this trailing draw. ELRAE NIGHT (1) has shown gradual improvement at each run since coming from New Zealand and there was a lot to like about his fast finishing Cranbourne third last weekend. He draws the pole, has Daryl Douglas and will be hard to beat (engaged Tabcorp Park last night). The query performer is TARTAN ROVER (5), an ex-Kiwi who’s won eight races in his homeland. He makes his Australian debut for Melton trainer Matthew Purcell. Ratings: 6 / 2 / 1, 8 / 5? / 7 / 3, 9. Suggested bet: WALBERON (6) to win. He fought on well after finding trouble when a close standing start third at Bendigo three starts back, then finished well to beat Strident (that fellow’s only loss in four starts so far) at Kilmore before a tough fourth to Sarum Prince in a fast Ballarat sprint affair a fortnight ago. This is the best he’s drawn in recent times and Caldow should have him in or near the lead and very hard to beat. AUBREY JAMES (3) was a winner here four starts back and flashed home from an impossible position when a close and luckless second at Yarra Valley two runs ago before finding trouble at Cobram last week and making late ground. He’s only started racing this season, has won 6 of 19 and looks Metro bound before too long. STARPICKET OSTI (2) won her fifth race for the season with a tough Wagga success in June, then flashed through late when a close second here to Sarum Prince before a Cobram fifth last Monday at her first run for a month, where she looked in need of the outing. She has gate speed and is sure to be prominent. FRANKIE MAGUIRE (10) is a consistent four year old who was runner up twice in strong Moonee Valley races in May, placed at Kilmore after that, then at his first run for a couple of months, was doing his best work at the finish when a close fifth at Yarra Valley recently. MELBOURNIAN (7) is a tough gelding who ran second to Perfect Katie from the trail in a 1:55.6 sprint affair at Tabcorp Park last weekend having no luck when favourite at Charlton on Thursday. He has strong claims despite the wide draw. KOKODA COURAGE (5) used the sprint lane to win impressively at Charlton last time and has an each way chance in this stronger race along with to former top filly FUSUSI (1), who’ll be improved by one run from a spell; ALDEBARAN SWANNEE (8), who won three on end, the latter two here before going for a spell; and GALVERON (9), who’s been runner up in handy races recently and Geelong and Ballarat. He’ll clean up nicely for that outing and may be straight in front here. WESTWOOD CASTLETON (9) is a talented but unreliable Chris Lang trained four year old who won here in May, made mistakes at his next two, and is resuming from a break of seven weeks off a handy trial effort here. Rate him highly. BILLY THE BRAT (2) is another who often causes himself problems, but a lightly raced four year old, he ‘s won two of six and looked good at his second run back from a spell when runner up at Maryborough on Redwood day a couple of weeks ago. AIDAN ANABETTIN (1) was a winner at Kilmore in May, then ran fourth in Stawell before going for a let tup and he made late ground from the rear when fourth at Geelong last Tuesday night. As the only runner from the front mark, he’ll be hard to beat. Each way chances to BILLY THE BRAT (2), (luckless recently and gets Alford); BUILTLIKEABRICK (5), who relegated TENDER DON (4) into third place when winning at Cobram last Monday; BARNEYS INVASION (7), who always runs on strongly in these races; and SUN SAMURAI (10), who’ll be better suited here than in recent runs over the shorter trip.
