LEE FREEDMAN In big races, go for the big trainer --- and they don't come much bigger than Graeme Bate. I think Velocette will be just off the speed and come home over the top. DAMIEN OLIVER Cindeen Shelby looks like she will ping the lids and land in front. I like being on the leader, especially in these big races, and she looks the one. Can't split 'em Nick Quinn NOT even those in the know can separate the Topgun favourites. TAB Sportsbet price assessor Robert Ely reported solid interest in the favourites for tonight's showdown, declaring he would be shocked if the two top picks didn't run the quinella. ''The box draw is absolutely vital in these big races,'' Ely said. ''Where you draw can make or break you and the two main fancies have drawn ideally. ''They are clearly the top two picks and I would expect heavy support on the fixed odds. ''I expect Cindeen Shelby to lead and, with Dashing Desire and Cosmic Rumble slow beginners, they will clear out from the field. ''Cindeen Shelby will lead to the turn and Velocette will be camped on her tail and is strong at the finish. ''I don't strongly recom- mend backing either of the two, other than to think the quinella looks the go.'' The biggest bet by yesterday was on High Earner, with one punter investing $1000 at $12. Ely agreed that High Earner was the best roughie. ''The punter is very astute and has a great record of identifying chances at big odds,'' Ely said. ''I feel $12 is the correct price, but the dog is all class and at the odds you could do a lot worse.'' Experts, though, were div- ided on other odds. Professional greyhound punter Kristian Scaggs thought the $3 on offer from Tab Sportsbet on Cindeen Shelby represented tremen- dous value. ''She looks like she will get an easy lead while the other fancies will be fighting for positions behind her,'' he said. ''I can see her being three lengths clear coming to the home turn and you simply can't give that big a start at the Meadows and win. ''From a punting perspec- tive, she will be closer to $2 than $3. I have her marked $2.20 so anything over that is big overs. ''If she can find the lead, the $3 on offer is like stealing candy from a baby.'' But leading form analyst Peter Jenkins was adamant Velocette was the dog to beat. ''Greame Bate has the best dog in the race (and) has drawn box one at the Meadows --- it almost seems a no-brainer,'' Jenkins said. ''Velocette will sit off Cindeen Shelby and give her windburn as he goes straight by her in the straight.'' Leon kicking more goals Among friends: Leon Davis with Farmor Swift and trainer Rob Britton. WAS it beginner's luck, or does Neon Leon Davis have another gift? The only time the Collingwood star has been to the greyhound races was at The Meadows in July --- and word has it that he and his mates did very well. Leon was with a group of friends and they backed a few winners. In fact, a source told the Herald Sun they backed a 30-1 shot who got up and won the last race.
