The "pole" has been the dominant barrier of late with three wins in the past four years, including last year's all-the-way win by Melpark Major. VICTORIA CUP TRIVIA BILL COLLINS TROTTERS' MILE TOP PICK 3 - SKYVALLEY (Vic) TRAINER: Chris Lang Sr DRIVER: Chris Lang Jr LAST FIVE STARTS: 11114 LATEST ODDS: $1.70 HAMILTON SAYS: Budding champion. Superbly bred, always looked exciting and has roared effor tlessly into the big league. Nothing wrong with his fourth in last week's Grand Prix after working hard. Drawn to return to winning form. DANGER 9 - SPRINGBANK RICHARD TRAINER: Phil Williamson DRIVER: Nathan Williamson LAST FIVE STARTS: 11115 LATEST ODDS: $10 HAMILTON SAYS: Outstanding Kiwi trotter who came across with winning form in their best races. Raced roughly at the star t, never looked happy and ran way below best last week. Has good sprint form so look for sharp improvement. The back row is a hurdle. BEST ROUGHIE 7 - ACACIA RIDGE TRAINER-DRIVER: Gary Hoban LAST FIVE STARTS: 11s28 LATEST ODDS: $21 HAMILTON SAYS: High-class trotter who has battled a string of major injury setbacks. On the comeback trail again. First-up run was good then got too far back and never a hope last week. Fitter again and sure to press forward from wide draw. Can give cheek. By Train: For more information, visit www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/timetables TRAINER-DRIVER: Lance Justice LAST FIVE STARTS: 12132 LATEST ODDS: $2.30 HAMILTON SAYS: Local hero and outstanding pacer who is due to win a really big one. Amazing run after setting the record-breaking time in front last outing. Quick beginner who is drawn ideally and should lead. Sure to take a power of running down TRAINER: Tim Butt DRIVER: Anthony Butt LAST FIVE STARTS: 57042 LATEST ODDS: $13 HAMILTON SAYS: Former Nor th American who burst on to the Australian scene winning last season's Hunter Cup and Inter Dominion final. Woeful start to this season, but showed good signs with much better run here last week. Begins well and should race handy. Keep safe. TRAINER-DRIVER: Natalie Rasmussen LAST FIVE STARTS: 11117 LATEST ODDS: $5.50 HAMILTON SAYS: The undisputed king. Won 55 races, including three Inter Dominion finals and a record $3.5 million. Now in the twilight of his career, but won first six star ts this season before Miracle Mile flop. Won this race in 2006. Drawn to be a big factor. TRAINER-DRIVER: Mark Peace LAST FIVE STARTS: 63194 LATEST ODDS: $34 HAMILTON SAYS: Classy local sit-sprinter who has been competitive at the top level in the past, but getting older. Did catch the eye with a late-closing third in an easier race here last week. Has been placed in five of his six runs this track, but place looks very best. TRAINER: Alan Tubbs DRIVER: Amy Tubbs LAST FIVE STARTS: 21215 LATEST ODDS: $5.50 HAMILTON SAYS: The defending champion and another great local hope. Led throughout to win from barrier one last year, but much harder from wider draw this time. Peaking at the right time. Brilliant Legends Mile win two star ts back, then brave and close-up fifth in the Miracle Mile. Has the class and talent. TRAINER-DRIVER: John McCarthy LAST FIVE STARTS: 42843 LATEST ODDS: $51 HAMILTON SAYS: Fantastic old fella who won this race way back in 2005. He also boasts two Miracle Mile wins. Still competitive at the top level, but probably not going well enough to be a factor from such a wide draw. Not disgraced in NZ Cup three star ts back. Maybe a place. TRAINER: John McCar thy DRIVER: Luke McCar thy LAST FIVE STARTS: 10361 LATEST ODDS: $26 HAMILTON SAYS: Former Kiwi who won at Group 1 level in Per th and has now done so for leading Queensland stable. The Treuer Memorial win last Saturday night was a career-best run after sitting outside a class horse in Karloo Mick and winning. The draw has been cruel. Big ask. TRAINER: Peter Tonkin DRIVER: Chris Alford LAST FIVE STARTS: 111s0 LATEST ODDS: $15 HAMILTON SAYS: Outstanding record at two, three and four and now stepping into the big league. Won the Chariots Of Fire and Breeders Crown to end last season. Too bad to be true when had to do too much work and tired badly at first run from a spell last week. Place hope from draw if gains a start. TRAINER: Cran Dalgety DRIVER: Dexter Dunn LAST FIVE STARTS: 41621 LATEST ODDS: $5 HAMILTON SAYS: One of the finds of the season. Little-known Kiwi pacer who ran fantastic second in NZ Cup and then carried that form to Australia for gutsy win in last Saturday week's Cranbourne Cup. Drawn to trail Smoken Up (if Maffioso doesn't get a run) and use sprint lane. Key runner. TRAINER: Glenn Douglas DRIVER: Daryl Douglas LAST FIVE STARTS: 82471 LATEST ODDS: $34 HAMILTON SAYS: Giant killer who has returned to form at just the right time. Won a string of feature races, albeit not quite at this level, last season. Had the perfect trip and beat Mr Feelgood on protest here last week. Big class rise and drawn worse. Place only. TRAINER: Ian Wilson DRIVER: Jim Douglass LAST FIVE STARTS: 22425 LATEST ODDS: $31 HAMILTON SAYS: One of Australia's most-improved pacers. Monster second (from a mile back) to Blacks A Fake in Queensland Championship five starts back. Not much has gone right since. No luck when made heaps of late ground at Bankstown last week. Place best from back row. TRAINER: Tony Peacock DRIVER: Damian Wilson LAST FIVE STARTS: 11212 LATEST ODDS: $41 HAMILTON SAYS: Former Kiwi who has made a real splash since coming to Victoria a few months ago. Won the Kilmore Cup from a standing-star t and far from disgraced when led and beaten a whisker in the Cranbourne Cup from a mobile last time. Huge test from this draw. VICTORIA CUP ADAM HAMILTON'S ASSESSMENT OF THE MAIN RACE MONKEY KING (NZ) 13 TRAINER: Benny Hill DRIVER: Ricky May LAST FIVE STARTS: 12111 LATEST ODDS: $9 HAMILTON SAYS: Always had talent, but gone to another level over the past month. Star ted by winning the NZ Cup, added the NZ Free-For-All and then snared last Sunday week's Miracle Mile. Awesome sit-sprinter who can still be a major player with any luck from this awful barrier. This is his biggest. (Group 1, 2240m) D n 8
