74 Herald Sun, Friday, January 25, 2013 heraldsun.com.au + + + + FB123 C M Y K DHS 25-JAN-2013 PAGE 74 FIRST JASON BONNINGTON RATES THE RUNNERS BALLARAT CUP TRAINER: Freddy Taiba DRIVER: Greg Sugars LAST FIVE STARTS: 13481 TAB ODDS: $2.10 MILLIONAIRE pacer who returns to the scene of his most agonising defeat in absolutely breathtaking from. He looked back to his very best winning the Bendigo Cup last star t and has the draw to rate as the testing material tonight. SUSHI SUSHI (Vic) 1 TRAINER: David Aiken DRIVER: Nathan Jack LAST FIVE STARTS: 35915 TAB ODDS: $51 HANDY local free-for-all horse who looks thrown into the deep end against some of Australasia's finest pacers tonight. He ran third in the Casey Classic but is a place prospect at best. SMUDGE BROMAC (Vic) 2 TRAINER: Belinda McCarthy DRIVER: Luke McCarthy LAST FIVE STARTS: 11721 TAB ODDS: $4.60 TEAM McCar thy's sole representative tonight who has looked a world-beater at Menangle and also impressed in the Group 1 Cranbourne Cup. His gate speed will be a factor but this is his biggest test to date. MACH ALERT (NSW) 3 TRAINER: Dean Braun DRIVER: Chris Alford LAST FIVE STARTS: 341f3 TAB ODDS: $21 TWO-time Group 1 winner who looked disappointing after leading in last week's Sheppar ton Cup but generally races much better with a sit. He will enjoy being the hunter rather than the hunted and can show up at odds. MUSTANG MACH (Vic) 4 TRAINER: Kerryn Manning DRIVER: Grant Campbell LAST FIVE STARTS: 63139 TAB ODDS: $21 WELL travelled 6YO who ran home stoutly in Horsham Cup then didn't look himself at Bendigo last time out. He boasts a win over Smoken Up in Queensland but may find this assignment too tough from the draw. MOTU CRUSADER (Vic) 5 TRAINER/DRIVER: Glenn Douglas LAST FIVE STARTS: 53767 TAB ODDS: $101 MULTIPLE Country Cup winner for Glenn Douglas who has struggled facing the cream in this, his five-year-old season. He is a horse of the future but won't be a factor tonight. SAINT FLASH (Vic) 6 TRAINER: Alan Tubbs DRIVER: Amy Tubbs LAST FIVE STARTS: 42421 TAB ODDS: $10 ARGUABLY Victoria's most popular pacer who enjoyed his biggest win since the 2008 Victoria Cup in the Horsham Cup last time out. The draw is awful but he can be dangerous with the right car t into the race. MELPARK MAJOR (Vic) 7 TRAINER: Paul Rowse DRIVER: Jodi Quinlan LAST FIVE STARTS: 31154 TAB ODDS: $13 BALLARAT local who defeated Mach Aler t in the Casey Classic and appears to be racing in career best form. He'll need luck from the alley with no sprint lane exit but follows out the favourite and must be respected. DECORATED JASPER (Vic) 8 TRAINER: Tim Butt DRIVER: Anthony Butt LAST FIVE STARTS: 66212 TAB ODDS: $10 FORMER Kiwi up-and-comer who's shown every indication he'll be a Grand Circuit player for several seasons to come since arriving on Aussie shores. He is yet to break through at the top level but only needs the right run here to figure. MAH SISH (Vic) 9 TRAINER/DRIVER: Grant Dixon LAST FIVE STARTS: 34231 TAB ODDS: $31 BREEDERS Crown winner when trained in New Zealand who has been racing well without setting the world on fire since shifting to Queensland. He is talented but this looks a big ask from the alley. DEVIL DODGER (Qld) 10 TRAINER/DRIVER: Mark Purdon LAST FIVE STARTS: 88043 TAB ODDS: $14 KIWI enigma who showed a welcome glimpse of his best form when placed in the Bendigo Cup last time out. At his best he'd be a massive hope but from the second line draw it will take his best ever Australian run to win. AUCKLAND REACTOR (NZ) 11 TRAINER/DRIVER: Lance Justice LAST FIVE STARTS: 11721 TAB ODDS: $6 AUSTRALIAN pacing legend that arrives here fresh from claiming his fourth SA Cup over Caribbean Blaster last time out. The draw is deplorable and he has never handled Ballarat but count him out at your peril in a major Group 1 race. SMOKEN UP (Vic) 12 $150,000 Group 1 PETstock BALLARAT PACING CUP ADAM HAMILTON TAB 1. Position on settling SPEED MAP BALLARAT CUP Analysis by Jason Bonnington SUSHI SUSHI (1) should have the speed to lead although MACH ALERT (3) also begins quickly and may challenge him early on. SMOKEN UP (12) is a natural enforcer who will look for the breeze at his earliest convenience while MAH SISH (9) and MELPARK MAJOR (7) should be the most dangerous late closers. DECORATED JASPER (8) should also be well placed with a soft run behind the speed. WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY 7 5 6 11 2 10 4 3 8 9 12 1 SMOKEN UP MAH SISH
